Waynesburg, PA – Geneva Men’s Basketball Golden Tornadoes earned their way back into the win column Saturday afternoon clinching a 74-72 final at Waynesburg. Chaese Vaudrin (Uniontown, OH/Lake) finished the fight on the free throw line tallying Geneva’s fourth win in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC). Now 7-8 overall, 4-4 in the PAC, Geneva enters next week with momentum on the road at all-time rival Westminster.

“This was a great road win,” said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. “We haven’t won down here in a while. Credit to our guys for fighting through, I’m really proud of them. They really showed a lot of heart tonight. I couldn’t be more happy for us.”

Chaese Vaudrin and Jimmy Leichliter (Connellsville, PA/Connellsville) set up Geneva for an early lead with back-to-back three-pointers. The Golden Tornadoes reached a double-figure lead (20-10) over the Yellow Jackets seven minutes into the half.

As a team, Geneva shot 39.5% from the field combined with a dominant presence off the glass out rebounding Waynesburg 27-21. Geneva held a 14-point lead at 37-23 entering the second half.

Leichliter struck again from beyond the arch with 15:55 remaining in the game handing the Golden Tornadoes a 46-31 lead. Waynesburg answered with four three-pointers on their way to outscoring Geneva 17-3 to take the lead 49-48.

After Waynesburg forced Geneva to take a full minute timeout, the Golden Tornadoes regrouped to take back the lead off a good pair of free throws by Ethan Moose (New Castle, PA/Neshannock); 50-49.

Costly shooting fouls handed the lead back to the hosts, 55-54 with 8:17 left in regulation. Each team battled for the lead beyond a single possession. Moose converted a steal into a fast break Geneva bucket for a 64-60 lead at 3:56. He tallied another jumper from the paint helping the Golden Tornadoes maintain the lead at 68-63. Vaudrin followed suit, knocking down a pair of free throws; 70-63.

The Yellow Jackets refused to relent finishing a series of free throw opportunities leading up to a swift good three-pointer with 26.2 seconds remaining with the score tied at 72-72.

Vaudrin drew a foul and finished his pair of free throws. The Yellow Jackets couldn’t get to the other end of the court in the 2.1 left on the clock for the 74-72 final.
