New Wilmington, PA – Geneva opened up the 2017 series against all-time rival Westminster on the road facing the Titans on Wednesday, January 18 at 8 p.m. The Golden Tornadoes outlasted the Titans in a 75-73 decision containing 11 lead changes and 10 ties. The rival conference win lifts Geneva to an 8-8 overall record, 5-4 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).

Geneva held a seven-point lead but the Titans tied the game 29-29 with 5:15 left in the half. After a Westminster good three-pointer, Geneva trailed 40-36 at 1:41. Chaese Vaudrin (Uniontown, OH/Lake) hit a good three-pointer (41-39) followed by a Westminster turnover. Vaudrin swiftly wove his way for a layup tying the game at 41-41 for the rivalry halftime score.

The Golden Tornadoes took the lead for the fourth time of the game at 19:04 in the second half (43-41).

A classic Geneva/Westminster game unfolded as the lead changed five times and the scoreboard remained leveled 63-63 at 8:14.

Tyler Crenshaw (Moon Twp, PA/Moon/Mt. Aloysius) earned a good basket and finished his free throw for a 70-70 tied game.

Jimmy Leichliter (Connellsville, PA/ Connellsville) sank a deep three keeping the game tied at 73-73 at 1:07. With the ball back into Geneva hands, Vaudrin drew a foul and made both free throws with 5.8 seconds left on the clock. Westminster couldn’t knock down a shot but drew a foul.  Unable to convert the free throw opportunities to points, Geneva outlasted Westminster for a 75-73 final.

Ethan Moose (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) had another fantastic game posting 17 points and eight rebounds. Leichliter also recorded 17 points while sinking five three-pointers. Sharp free thrower, Vaudrin, tallied 16 points. David Oliver (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) had key rebounds adding up to six.

The Golden Tornadoes return home to host Washington & Jefferson at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 21.
