Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva wasn’t able to find the home win on Saturday, January 28 while hosting the Saint Vincent Bearcats. The 73-60 loss moves Geneva’s overall record to 9-10, 6-6 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC). After dropping a tight decision at Saint Vincent on January 3, Geneva looked forward to hosting the Saint Vincent Bearcats on Saturday, January 28, in hopes to split the series. Geneva wasn’t able reach its goal unable to capitalize on the home court advantage.

“We were inconsistent tonight,” said head coach Jeff Santarsiero. “We didn’t shoot the ball well early and got behind. We have to limit our mistakes; we made the same mistakes we made up there. They are a very good team, number one in the conference, so you have to be on your best game. I did like the way we finished the game battling hard. I told the coach we will see them again.”

Going 0-7 beyond the arc didn’t help the Golden Tornadoes first half of play. Saint Vincent held a 13-point lead at 24-11 with 7:15 remaining. The team’s 23% from the field hurt their cause on the scoreboard. Geneva did manage to slightly outrebound the Bearcats 21-20 in the first 20 minutes of play.

At the half, Geneva trailed 35-22 with Matt Dragan (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) posting eight points, Ethan Moose (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) with six points. Off the glass, Chaese Vaudrin (Uniontown, OH/Lake) and Jimmy Leichliter (Connellsville, PA/ Connellsville) recorded four rebounds.

The second half was much of the same tale as the first. Geneva struggled to find the basket as Saint Vincent continued to apply defensive pressure while adding to its lead.

Down 13, 52-39, with 10:20 left on the clock, Geneva needed to find its rhythm. Dragan’s good layup paired with Ethan Moose’s two good jumpers, the Golden Tornadoes were starting to find its needed offensive surge. Joey Jou’s (Miami, FL/Westwood Christian) slick layup moved the score to 56-47 with 6:32 remaining.

Moose struck again with a good jumper from inside the paint. In the next Geneva possession, Moose connected with Dragan who finished the play, keeping the game at a nine-point difference. Vaudrin’s good basket from an inbound throw with three seconds on the shot clock moved the game to 65-60 with 3:05 remaining.

Geneva couldn’t breach the five-point gap to challenge for the lead, dropping a 13-point decision in the end.

Geneva’s scoring was led by Moose with 20 points. Dragan tallied a career-high 14 points and six rebounds. His previous 13-point high was at Saint Vincent last year.

Also scoring double figures was Vaudrin with 10 points, six rebounds. Leichliter ended the night with six rebounds.

On Wednesday, February 1 Geneva returns to road play at Thiel College for a PAC game starting at 4 p.m.
