Cold Second Quarter Shooting Stings Geneva at Waynesburg

Waynesburg, PA – Geneva women’s basketball Golden Tornadoes dropped a 70-53 decision at Waynesburg Saturday afternoon. Despite being neck and neck for three quarters, Geneva’s cold second quarter was too much to recover from in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. Now 4-11 overall, 1-7 in the PAC the Golden Tornadoes will head to Westminster on Wednesday, January 18.

Geneva found itself behind early at Waynesburg trailing 11-3. A quick rally from the Golden Tornadoes showcased Marissa Heaney’s (New Castle, PA/Union) good three-pointer keeping the game within one possession at 13-10. Geneva struck again from outside the circle, this time from Jodie Carlson (Warsaw, IN/Warsaw) for the first quarter score 16-15, Geneva behind by one.

The scoreboard tipped in the second, Geneva went cold unable to find a basket while Waynesburg racked up 16 points. Lydia Songer (Wexford, PA/Pine Richland) broke the ice with a good three-pointer; 31-18. The Golden Tornadoes retreated to the locker room down 35-18 at the half.

Callie Ford’s (New Middletown, OH/Springfield Local) good layup opened scoring in the third. Miranda Heaney (New Castle, PA/Union) sunk a deep three moving the board to 39-25.

Geneva outscored Waynesburg 21-19 in the fourth but couldn’t overcome the second quarter deficit.

Ford posted 15 points and six rebound in the fourth alone recording a double double with 24 total points, 10 rebounds.

Next week, the Golden Tornadoes will be on the road at all-time rival Westminster on Wednesday, January 18 at 6 p.m. Geneva will return home on Saturday, January 21 to host Washington & Jefferson College at 1 p.m.
