Geneva Women’s Basketball Comeback Attempt Falls Short in New Wilmington

New Wilmington, PA – Geneva and Westminster each had their eyes on the same prize Wednesday night – reentering the win column. Geneva entered the all-time rival’s court with a six-game losing skid while the hosts had a four-game losing streak of their own. Geneva’s comeback attempt fell short in a 76-74 final, extending their streak to seven. The two-point loss moves Geneva’s overall record to 4-12, 1-8 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC).

Tied at 7-7 in the first quarter, Geneva went on a seven-point run for the early 14-7 lead. Lydia Songer (Wexford PA/Pine Richland) sunk a three-pointer moving Geneva 18-9 over the Titans. The Titans fought back forcing the first lead change of the game with 20 seconds left in the first quarter; 21-20.

Geneva was unable to reclaim the lead but managed to keep the game within a possession entering the locker room down by three at the half; 39-36. In the first two quarters the Golden Tornadoes shot 36.7 % from the field lead by Songer with 10 points, Marissa Heaney (New Castle, PA/Union) with eight and Callie Ford (New Middletown, OH/Springfield Local) with six.

The third quarter contained more back-and-forth action for a score of 56-51, Westminster’s advantage.

The Titans created momentum early in the fourth, outscoring Geneva 12-2. Ford posted a good three-pointer and jumper to start the Golden Tornadoes run to recovery at 65-60 with 6:09 left in regulation.

A battle beyond the arch begun as Westminster hit a three followed by a good three-pointer by Marissa Heaney. Ford’s pair of free throws brought the game to 70-66. Geneva still trailing, Ford hit another jumper for a two-point game; 70-68 with less than two minutes remaining.

Geneva’s comeback attempt fell short as Westminster reentered the win column with a 76-74 decision.

Ford recorded a double double with an impressive 22 points, 12 rebounds while also tallying a block and three steals.

Marissa Heaney put up 14 points after scoring four three-pointers. Twin sister Miranda Heaney (New Castle, PA/Union) also hit double figures with ten points.

Songer finished the game with 13 points.

On Saturday, January 21 the Golden Tornadoes host Washington & Jefferson at 1 p.m. as they return home after back-to-back road games.
