Wynn The Battle PAC Campaign Highlights Lori Wynn’s Return to Metheny

Beaver Falls, PA – On Saturday, January 28, the Saint Vincent Bearcats and Geneva Golden Tornadoes faced off in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) game to finish the teams’ season series. The visiting Bearcats sealed the series sweep in a 70-51 final. The loss moves Geneva’s overall record to 4-15, 1-11 in the PAC.

The match was one of five of the league’s opening day tipoffs in the PAC Wynn The Battle campaign in support of the battle Geneva women’s basketball head coach Lori Wynn has been fighting against Ovarian cancer, diagnosed in July 2016. The conference came together to sell Wynn The Battle t-shirts, with sale funds benefiting the Beaver County Cancer & Heart Association (BCCHA). In between chemo treatments, Coach Wynn returned to Metheny’s hardwood for the first time for the 2016-17 season, a long-awaited visit for the women’s basketball program, the campus, and community. 

Rachel Moore (Vandergrift, PA/Apollo Ridge) snagged an offensive rebound and set up Marissa Heaney (New Castle PA/Union) for a good three-pointer to open the Golden Tornadoes’ scoring (6-3). Saint Vincent hit a hot streak tallying a seven-point run to close the first quarter; Saint Vincent 13, Geneva 6.

Miranda Heaney’s (New Castle PA/Union) slick pass to Callie Ford (New Middletown, OH/Springfield Local) raised Geneva to 11 early in the second quarter. Moore took her turn to connect with Ford for another good three-pointer. The back-to-back three-pointers shorted the Bearcats lead to one; 15-14. Sharp passing between Jodie Carlson (Warsaw, IN/Warsaw) and Moore handed the first lead change of the game; Geneva 16, Saint Vincent 15.

The Bearcats answered the lead change with 11 uncontested points bringing the halftime score to Saint Vincent 31, Geneva 18.

Ford opened the third quarter draining a bucket from beyond the circle followed by another three-pointer by Miranda Heaney. The opening six-points moved the score to 35-24. Saint Vincent’s 12-point run started to bury Geneva, ending with a third quarter score of 62-30.

Geneva’s seven-point run sparked energy for the Golden Tornadoes offense, cutting Saint Vincent’s lead to 62-37. The last quarter stretch was too little too late as Geneva took the final loss.

Ford led Geneva’s stat lines with 11 points, 9 rebounds. Carlson finished with 12 points while Marissa Heaney recorded 15 points.

On Wednesday, February 1, the Golden Tornadoes will continue their season on the road at Thiel, tipoff at 5:30 p.m. Coach Wynn will continue to be on College Hill with the team through Saturday, February 4 when the Golden Tornadoes will host the Thomas More Saints.
