Geneva College Student Athletic Advisory Committee Recycles Shoes with Nike Grind

Beaver Falls, Pa.- Across the Geneva College campus, gold boxes with the signature Nike swoosh are appearing. Geneva’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) has partnered with Nike Grind to collect old shoes to be recycled into athletic surfaces such as basketball courts, running tracks, athletic fields, and playgrounds.

Established in 1990, Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program processes old athletic shoes into Nike Grind materials. Nike engineers researched a number of possible uses of old athletic shoes, before concluding that grinding them into sports surfacing was the best way to use the recycled materials.

Three types of raw materials are made from a recycled athletic shoe: rubber from the outsole, foam from the midsole, and fabric from the upper. Grinding these materials allows for the construction of new sport and playground surfaces.

If you have an old pair of athletic shoes, consider donating them to Nike Grind to be recycled and reused. The gold Nike Grind collection boxes are located at Alex's Dining Hall, Metheny Fieldhouse and Skye Lounge in the Student Center. Geneva's collection will end April 28, 2017.
