Geneva Splits Day One with 4-1 Win Over Swarthmore

Naples, Fl. – Geneva Softball (1-1) fell 11-3 in the season opener against Dominican University (IL) but recovered against Swarthmore College (PA) rallying for a 4-1 win.

“I really liked the way we came back in the second game after losing to a very good team,” said 15th year Head Coach Van Zanic. “I still think we could have a very good offensive team. If we pitch and play solid defense we could have a good year.

“Laura Innocenzi had a great day at second base. She led the way in a solid defense effort.”

Laura Innocenzi (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) tallied six putouts, six assists in the field in the doubleheader committing no errors.

“It was nice to see Casey put one over the fence,” said Zanic. “Hopefully, that happens a lot this year.”

In game one against Dominican, Casey Farkasovsky (Beaver, PA/Beaver) drilled a two-run homer over left field in the fourth. Down 4-2 at the top of the fifth, Hannah Logan’s (Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) sacrifice bunt created enough havoc for Brooke Shyda (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon), pinch running for Ashley Grow (Beaver, OH/Waverly) who was walked, to cross home plate for Geneva’s third run. Dominican’s bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth handing Geneva the first game loss.

Grow’s bat got hot in game two against Swarthmore, going 2-3 at bat, getting on base 5-6 on the day. Grow’s RBI single in the fourth batted in April Lude (Canfield, OH/Western Reserve) tying the game 1-1. The Golden Tornadoes earned the win in the fifth, adding insurance in the sixth. Haley Sainato (New Castle, PA/Mohawk) singled and advanced to third on two different errors. She came home off a wild pitch recording an unearned run. Grow started Geneva in the sixth with a double. Shyda took over base running responsibilities, went to third on a wild pitch and came home off Sainato’s double.

Geneva is set to return to the field tomorrow, Tuesday, March 7 starting at 9 a.m. against Alverno College followed by an 11 a.m. game against Rockford at the CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
