(Beaver Falls, PA) – A Geneva College Communication Disorders alumna and student separately published their work in recent publications in the field of speech, hearing and language.

Graciela Arias, a 2013 graduate, is lead author of “Bilingual Language Assessment in American Schools,” which was published in the peer-reviewed journal Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools. The study demonstrates that current bilingual language assessment practices by speech-language-pathologists (SLPs) in schools have become more compliant with guidelines of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 2004) but that adequate training in bilingual language assessment is still needed. Arias currently works for RehabCare in a Kindred Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Hannah Troup, a senior, was published in the newsmagazine of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), The ASHA Leader, with her article, “When What You Learn In Class Happens to You.” This article details how Troup’s personal experience with hearing loss provides insight into her future work as a speech-language-pathologist. The article attracted a personal response from the president of ASHA.
