Double Win Brings Geneva Baseball Home in Style; Geneva Defeats Marywood in Double-Header Action

Ft. Pierce, Fl- The Geneva College baseball team defeated Marywood in their double header match-up on Tuesday, March 14 with scores of 18-8 and 6-5 respectively. The double win moves Geneva to an overall record of 4-6 remaining 0-0 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play.

The offense was active very early on in the bottom of the first. Geneva scored seven runs to give them an early led. Marywood was able to make some offensive headway in the first, however Geneva would create distance in the second inning when they scored seven runs.

The Golden Tornadoes were able to collect 22 hits overall coming from junior Forest Beighley (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk), sophomore Jericho Hilling (Willamsburg, PA/Hollidaysburg), sophomore Mark Overmier (Crofton, MD/Mount St. Joseph), junior Dan Staub (Oil City, PA/Oil City), junior Richie Rowe (Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk), junior Joey Luciana (Oakmont, PA/St. Joseph), junior Vinny Howells (Beaver Falls, PA/Riverside), and freshman Jacob Poremski (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area). Beighley and Staub were each able to collect four RBIs a piece.

Senior Jeff Parker (Green Brook, NJ/Timothy Christian) earned the win for Geneva. He pitched six innings, giving up five runs, allowing ten hits, and striking out four batters.

Game two came down to the wire as extra innings were necessary to complete the winning effort for the Golden Tornadoes to be able to defeat Marywood again in the eighth inning when Beighley was able to cross the plate after Howells put the ball in play.

Marywood scored four runs in the fourth inning to take the first lead of the game. Geneva responded in the fifth inning by scoring two and again in the sixth by scoring three for the second lead change of the game.  In the bottom of the seventh inning, Marywood batted in a run to tie things up at five before Geneva would pull out the victory in the top of the eighth.

Rowe earned the win for Geneva College. He went five innings, allowing one run, six hits, striking out six batters, and walking one player.

Sophomore Dillon Taggart (Livingston Manor, NY/Livingston Manor Central) and Overmier each drove in two runs to lead Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes didn't commit a single error in the field. 

After their flight home, the Geneva baseball team will return home on Friday, March 17 when they host Clarks Summit University at 2 and 4 p.m.
