Fort Myers, Fl. – Now 4-4 overall, Geneva squeaked passed Mount Mary University 2-1 and was upset by Salem State University 9-8 in eight innings on Friday, March 10.

“We need to learn how to win games in the final innings,” said head coach Van Zanic. “I have done a poor job in preparing this team for late game situations. I take total responsibility for the loss in game two.

Our girls battled back and again were in a position to win in extra innings but learning how to close out games is an important step for teams to go from good to great.”

Haley Sainato (New Castle, PA/Mohawk) rounded the bases for Geneva’s two runs in the game one win over Mount Mary University (MMU). Sainato scored in the top of the third, was answered by MMU and then crossed home plate again in the fifth for the victory. She was batted in by Lucia Fee (Wampum, PA/Mohawk).

Casey Farkasovsky (Beaver, PA/Beaver) pitched the complete game for the win. She allowed only three hits, walked one, and struck out six batters.

In game two bats came alive out of both dugouts. Salem State University tallied a run in the first and second. Geneva closed the gap with a run in the third and top of the fifth. Recovering from the slow start, Geneva tied the game 2-2. But, then Salem State struck again scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Geneva matched the Salem State Vikings four-run inning with a four-run inning of its own. Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD/Chapelgate Christian) smacked one to center field bringing home Hannah Logan (Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) and Brooke Shyda (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon) for the 6-6 ballgame. The Golden Tornadoes allowed no hits in the bottom of the seventh taking the game to extra innings. Geneva posted two runs in the top of the eighth but it proved too little against the Vikings walk off win.

Bobbie Ann Theiss (Lisbon, OH/Beaver Local) look the loss after 3.2 innings of work.

Kenyon and Nichols are next on the docket for Saturday, March 11 pair of games. Geneva will start the day against Kenyon at 11 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. meeting with Nichols at the North Collier Regional Park in Naples, Florida.
