Geneva Brought Out the Broom on Saturday; Golden Tornadoes Sweep Kenyon & Nichols

Naples, Fl. – Geneva College recorded its first sweep in Saturday’s (March 11) pair in Naples, Florida. The Golden Tornadoes fifth inning comeback lifted Geneva 7-5 over Kenyon in the day’s first contest. Geneva encore showcased a 10-1 win against Nichols. The sweep raises Geneva’s overall record to 6-4.

“We enjoyed our best day of the trip today,” said head coach Van Zanic. “We were able to put consistent at bats together and get big hits when we needed them.

“Casey gave us two huge hits in the first game and she gave us a solid effort in the circle,” said Zanic.

Casey Farkasovsky (Beaver, PA/Beaver) bat was red hot against Kenyon. Farkasovsky tallied two homers, five RBIs in Geneva’s 7-5 win.  Farkasovsky has now posted five home runs in her ten games as a Golden Tornado. In addition to Farkasovsky’s big day, Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD/Chapelgate Christian) went 2-4 at the plate scoring two runs, two RBIs.

Geneva and Kenyon each recorded two-run homers in the first. Kenyon pulled ahead in the third with a three-run performance. Down 5-2, the Golden Tornadoes displayed an offensive explosion featuring five runs, five hits, capitalizing on one error, leaving one on base in the fifth inning. Geneva’s big inning held and kept the lead as the following innings were scoreless.

Geneva’s bats were anything but silent in game two against Nichols. The Golden Tornadoes posted 15 hits and 10 runs on offense. Meanwhile, in the field, Geneva defense committed no errors shutting down any scoring opportunities for the Nichols Bison.

Geneva scored one run in the first, three in the second, two in the third, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Farkasovsky earned the win after she pitched four innings surrendering only three hits, no runs, walked one and struck out one. Bobbie Ann Theiss (Lisbon, OH/Beaver Local) tallied the save after three innings of work. She allowed four hits, one run and walked none.

“In game two we hit up and down the line up and played well defensively,” said Zanic.

 “I’m very proud of the ladies today. It’s been a long week and they gutted through two wins.”

The Golden Tornadoes will be back in action on Monday, March 13 for one more double header in the Florida sunshine. Geneva will face Edgewood at 11 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. game against Marian.
