(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – Dr. Cephas Tushima, Deputy Provost of Academic Affairs and Associate Professor of Biblical Studies at Jos ECWA Theological Seminary, Nigeria, will be the Chapel speaker on Wednesday, April 12 at 10:10 a.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse. Tushima is serving as the college’s first Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence throughout the 2016-17 academic year.
Tushima’s projects have included completing his book entitled, Integrity Matters: Women of Honor in the Public Square, teaching in the Bible Department, and serving as a curriculum consultant.
As his term nears an end, Tushima has had the opportunity to reflect on his time at Geneva College. His experience has been unique, he says, and he continues to be encouraged and grateful for his daily work. In his graduate program in Nigeria, he became accustomed to serving more as a facilitator while the students controlled the class discussion. At Geneva, he has adapted to an undergraduate atmosphere where he takes a more central role in leading the class discussions and guiding students. He values the opportunity to give his students insight on the Christian worldview and on the reality of the church in Nigeria.
Tushima has appreciated new-found relationships with Geneva faculty since his first day on campus. “When I arrived here, school had not reopened [for fall classes], but Dr. Cole, who I corresponded a lot with before coming here and who is such a wonderful person, went out of his way and invited me into his home,” he says. While mentioning fellow Bible professors Dr. Watt and Dr. Curtis, he states that he could “go on and on” with the list of people who made him feel at home at Geneva.
Tushima studied at various times in University of Jos; Federal School of Surveying, Oyo; Jos ECWA Theological Seminary (JETS); Jerusalem University College (Jerusalem); and Westminster Theological Seminary (Philadelphia), where he obtained his Ph.D. in Hermeneutics and Biblical Interpretation. An Associate Professor of Biblical Studies and Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs of JETS, Tushima’s international working experience (past & present) includes being adjunct professor, Eastern University, St. Davids, USA; Research Fellow, University of South Africa, Pretoria; and Research Fellow at Stellenbosch University, South Africa.
Dr. Tushima’s published works include The Fate of Saul’s Progeny in the Reign of David; Integrity Matters: Men of Honour in the Public Square, and several articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is also a contributor to Mission as Ministry of Reconciliation, The Baker Illustrated Bible Dictionary, and the forthcoming African Study Bible. He is the President of the Association of Theological Institutions in Nigeria (ATIN).
