Program covers responses to disasters, mental health and opioid crises and caring for helping heroes

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) — Geneva College announces the Geneva Cares in Community Conference, a conference focused on caring for those impacted by crisis and on caring for those who care for others during crisis. The conference is hosted at Geneva College’s Alexander Hall, Benedum Room, on Friday, April 20, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The one-day conference features three sessions – morning, lunch and afternoon – where speakers from local non-profit, education, law enforcement, advocacy, religious, and governmental organizations will address crisis intervention, social and human service topics. The morning session covers crisis/disaster response and responding to the opioid epidemic. Geneva College students and faculty appreciate internship supervisors during the lunch session, which is open to all attendees.  The conference closes with an afternoon session centered on mental health and suicide awareness, the role of churches in helping and healing, and caring for helping heroes.

“The Geneva Cares in Community Conference is ideally timed to address important issues facing first responders, church leaders, human services and other professionals who are on the front lines of numerous social challenges,” says Dr. Cathy Sigmund, Geneva College Professor of Psychology & Services. “I am especially proud of our Geneva undergraduate students who helped organize this conference both as a service to the local community and in appreciation for their internship supervisors. Their efforts are emblematic of the Geneva spirit of service.“

Attendees can choose to register for any or all sessions at Geneva.edu/genevacares. The cost of general admission registration is $10 and includes lunch. The conference is free for students, conference speakers and, thanks to the generosity of Geneva students, former or current internship supervisors. Conference speaker information, schedule and registration is available at Geneva.edu/genevacares.
