(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – Students and professors of the fall Human Services class HSV 303, Agency Field Experience, held a fundraiser on November 16, 2018 to support children participating in the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Beaver County program. Organizers invited students and staff to donate money towards a professor or staff member they wished to see receive a pie in the face during the 10:10 hour in the Brigadoon. Candidates to receive a pie included Dr. Jonathan Watt, Dr. Joel Ward, Dr. David Shaw, Dr. Terry Thomas, Dr. Doug Bradbury, and Dean of Student Development Jamie Swank.

Dr. Ward, who raked in the most cash, received a paper crown and was pied by sophomore Luke Miller. In second place was Dr. Shaw, pied by senior Kenny Nace. Professor Stephanie Schindel, who teaches HSV 303, reported that the class exceeded their goal of $150, the cost of busing BBBS kids to Geneva’s campus once a week. The event generated a total of $206.46.

HSV 303 hosts three events each year to help connect unmatched “littles” in BBBS with Geneva students. This year, the class of Dana Roth, Jana Newberry, Vanessa Foltz, Twyla Shaw, Katie McAfoose, and Kelaiah Kneuss desired to host this "pie" event to showcase both Geneva professors and students coming together and supporting BBBS.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the largest donor-and-volunteer-supported mentoring network in the nation, including programs to connect children in Beaver County with current Geneva students. BBBS aids children in adversity, ages 6-18, by providing them with homework help, improving their self-confidence and encouraging them to be the best student/sibling/child/friend they can be. Geneva students and staff may see BBBS kids in Alex’s dining hall from time to time, as current students invite them to dinner and fellowship with friends. BBBS has lasting impact on not only the futures of the young in the community, but also the lives of the volunteers as well.
