(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – The Geneva College Criminal Justice Club, along with The Common Ground Project, will host speaker Robbie Tolan on February 15, 2019 at 7 p.m. in Skye Lounge, Student Center. Tolan, author of the book No Justice: One White Police Officer, One Black Family, and How One Bullet Ripped Us Apart, will share his experience as a survivor of a police shooting and the legal process that followed.

Son of major league baseball player Bobby Tolan, Robbie Tolan describes himself as an advocate for victims of police brutality. In 2008, in the driveway of his home in Bellaire, TX, Tolan and his cousin were confronted by a police officer and mistakenly accused of stealing a car, which was in fact registered in Tolan’s name. As the confrontation escalated, an unarmed Tolan was shot in the chest by Sgt. Jeffery Cotton. After Sgt. Cotton was acquitted in 2010, the family filed a federal lawsuit, which set a precedent in the U.S. Supreme Court for the way in which judges may grant police unqualified immunity and was settled in 2015.

This event is free and open to all.
