Geneva Starts New Semester with Academic Convocation Ceremony

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – The Geneva College community focuses on God’s glory to mark the start of the Fall 2019 semester with the traditional Academic Convocation Ceremony on Friday, August 30. Faculty members in formal academic regalia will welcome first-year students in Metheny Fieldhouse at 10:10 a.m. Convocation will be livestreamed at Geneva.edu/live.

To begin the ceremony, first-year students process together into the setting for the first and only time before they attend their own commencement ceremony in four years.

The 2018 award winner for Excellence in Teaching, professor of Mathematics Dr. Phil Holladay will present the convocation address, “An Awesome Plan, How Can We be so Loved!.” Dean of Student Development, Jamie Swank will present the charge to students and pray for them.

Dr. Melinda Stephens, Geneva College Provost, will present awards in four categories to faculty. After receiving the nominations of students and faculty colleagues, the annual award recipients for Excellence in Teaching, Excellence in Scholarship, Excellence in Part-Time Teaching and Outstanding Service are revealed at each Convocation ceremony. Recipients receive a monetary gift and a plaque.

Dr. Calvin L. Troup, Geneva College President, will announce faculty promotion and tenure decisions and close the ceremony in prayer.
