Geneva College, Third Presbyterian Church Present “Passion and Song: The Voice of Clara Schumann” in Two Free Concerts

BEAVER FALLS, PA — Geneva College presents a passionate narrative created from Clara Schumann’s art songs and piano pieces in two September 2019 concerts marking the bicentennial of the birth of the preeminent nineteenth century concert pianist and composer. A team of singers and pianists will commemorate this historical event by performing Schumann’s songs and piano pieces.

On her birthday, Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m., a group of singers and musicians will present “The Music of Clara Schumann,” including several of her piano pieces.  This concert will be hosted at Geneva College’s John White Chapel, Old Main in Beaver Falls, PA 15010, followed by a birthday reception.

The second concert will present “The Complete Songs of Clara Schumann” on Saturday, September 21 at 7 p.m. at the historic Third Presbyterian Church, 5701 5th Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15232.

Both concerts offer free admission provided through the sponsorship of the Geneva Visiting Artist & Lecture Series (GVALS) and the Third Presbyterian Church Concert Series.

Performers include Pittsburgh-area musicians: soprano Lara Lynn McGill, soprano Kathryn Copeland Donaldson, soprano Sasha Piastro, baritone Brian Doherty, bass Sean Donaldson, tenor David Kenneth Smith, and pianists Marie Libal-Smith and Nanette Kaplan Solomon.

The music has been arranged to form a dramatic narrative, in the style of Clara’s husband, composer Robert Schumann, who created song cycles. The songs will be performed in German, with English translations.
