(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – Geneva College engineering students placed fourth in the Ohio Valley Region of the 2021 American Institute of Steel Construction Student Steel Bridge Competition held in April.

The contest that tests the knowledge and practicality of university students in the field of structural engineering was held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. Unique to this year, teams were required to arrange for their own location and resources to record video of their attempt and to find their own support and judges, in addition to the typical bridge construction.

Geneva’s team of Patrick Hughes, Jonathan Boltz, Kevin Pasho, Will Yasenka, Jarron Mihoci, Jordan Martsolf and Calista Ulmer designed and built a truss bridge. The top three regional teams were invited to nationals. Although they missed qualifying for nationals by just one place, team captain Hughes says the experience was satisfying.

“This project was always interesting to me because it’s the one where I first got into hands-on work within my engineering major,” he says. “I started helping the team during my sophomore year with fabrication work, and last year, we were not able to finish before the COVID lockdown.  So, this year was important to me; I wanted to finish what I had started with the previous year’s team.”
