(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – The Geneva College Chemistry Society is looking to local community members for lawn and garden soil samples for chemical analysis that reveals its nature and contents, enabling proper fertilization and treatment for the growing season.

Soil samples in plastic bags labeled with name and address can be brought to Geneva College campus in Beaver Falls, outside room 212 in the Science & Engineering Building (S&E) Monday through Friday from March 15-31, 2022, during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Only the first 50 soil samples will be analyzed.

Soil will be tested for pH, potassium, and phosphorous content. The pH measures the acidity of the soil while potassium and phosphorus are fertilizer nutrients needed by plants. Results will be mailed out by the first week of May.

The samples used for testing must be dug up with a clean trowel and should be a plug of soil about six inches in depth. You may receive a more comprehensive result by taking several plugs and mixing them together. If possible, soil should be dug up when it is fairly dry. Spread the soil sample on a newspaper to dry indoors for at least 24 hours, mix thoroughly and break up lumps, then place about one cup into a plastic bag. Label the bag with your name and address. If a certain plot of land has a problem area, please send in a separate sample from this area.

The Geneva Chemistry Society is accepting a donation of one dollar per sample to balance the costs of analysis. Any questions regarding soil testing? Contact Kerry McMahon at 724-847-6722.
