(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – Geneva College welcomes Professor Emerita of Philosophy, Esther Lightcap Meek, PhD, back to campus as the 2022 Dr. Byron I. Bitar Memorial Lecture in Philosophy speaker in a series open to the public.

Meek will cover the topic, “Philosophy for Artistry: Beauty and the Artful Dance of Communion with the Real,” in two lectures in John White Chapel of Old Main: “Are Artists Concerned With the Real? The Welcoming Face of Things” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, and “Is Artistry Knowing? Loving the Real and the Epiphany of Beauty” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 17.

Meek is a Fujimura Institute Scholar, an Associate Fellow with the Kirby Laing Center for Public Theology, and a member of the Polanyi Society. An author and public speaker, her books, workshops, and talks offer her distinctive philosophical proposals “for all of us.” Her books are used in high schools, colleges and seminaries, churches, and other organizations.

Her books include Longing to Know: The Philosophy of Knowledge for Ordinary People (Brazos, 2003); Loving to Know: Introducing Covenant Epistemology (Cascade, 2011); A Little Manual for Knowing (Cascade, 2014); and Contact With Reality: Michael Polanyi’s Realism and Why It Matters (Cascade, 2017). She is currently writing Doorway to Artistry, in a series relating her philosophical approach to different areas of life.

Meek taught philosophy at Geneva College from 2004 to 2021. She now works from Steubenville, Ohio. Find her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, and at her website, www.estherlightcapmeek.com.

The lecture is named after and in memory of Byron I. Bitar, a philosophy professor at Geneva College, who passed away in 2003, to carry on his legacy and passion for philosophy. This annual event has been held since 2004, endowed by the William C. Kriner Family.
