Beaver Falls, PA - Students at Geneva College held their second annual three-legged relay race fundraiser on Friday, November 3 to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Beaver County.

Students in the Social Services class relating to agency field experience put together this fundraiser, asking their peers to help them by entering teams in a three-legged relay race.  Teams were made up of 8 people, who were positioned across the field in pairs.  Starting in one endzone, teammates raced, tied to their partner, to the next pair until the final pair crossed the finish line in the opposite endzone.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to do something meaningful for the BBBS community and having so many students involved in raising awareness for the foundation,” said Gavin Landis ’24.  Landis is a student in the class holding the fundraiser.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Rachel Crisci who is a 2015 graduate of Geneva College was present for the event.  She said, “We are extremely grateful for our partnership with Geneva College. To the students and Professor Schindel, we thank you for your huge support of the program. We couldn’t continue our mission of advocating for the youth of Beaver County and fostering mentor relationships without your help!”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Beaver County’s mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.  Students at Geneva are passionate about supporting this mission and giving back to the community in which Geneva resides.  “The support for this event is just one reason why a student should choose Geneva. My students do not simply run this fundraiser because it's a class assignment,” said Professor Stephanie Schindel, Chair, Department of Psychology and Social Services. “They embrace the mission of the College and the social service major.  They desire to make a positive impact in our community!"

This year, the event broke last year’s record, and raised $4,005.  Even the smallest impact from events like this can have a difference in the lives of matches through Big Brothers Big Sisters, and these students are working hard to make the biggest impact they can.  “I am really excited to watch the students and all of their work come to a place where Geneva’s community can witness the hard work and dedication in the social services program where our collective purpose is to love God, love others, and love Jesus,” said Dr. Megan Tritt ’07, Associate Professor of Psychology and Social Services.
