An Unexpected Journey

Image of the story's subject

Education and doing well in school have always been something that was considered essential and important for my family. Both my parents completed post-secondary education and worked full-time professional jobs; my dad was a registered nurse, and my mom was a nuclear operator.

I started my undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh but had to withdraw because my dad became terminally ill and passed away. Finances became difficult for my mom who was now raising three daughters on her own. Finishing my undergraduate degree was no longer possible.

I decided to complete an associate degree and start working within the printing and publishing industry. Entry level jobs were easy to find, but I started to notice that I was not being considered for more promotions and advanced opportunities. While I had a great deal of work experience, I lacked a bachelor’s degree.

While attending a leadership seminar, Leadercast, I noticed a table containing information about Geneva College’s Online Degree Program. While I lived only minutes away from the college, I knew very little about the college’s programs. The variety of degree choices and personalized attention provided me with an opportunity to go back to school and complete my degree.

Geneva College looked at my college transcripts and was able to accept many credits that I had acquired over the years. After determining the classes I would need to take, we were able to set up a plan so that I could attend school part-time. I continued to work full-time while taking one class every 8 weeks until I finally graduated. The program is designed for busy adults which was perfect for me.

Going back to school at the age of 40 was not easy. Technology has changed and the coursework is completely online. Personal connections, which are a huge part of in-person classes, are not as robust in the online format. But the benefit of having a program that allows an individual to continue to work and balance the needs of family, church, and other obligations was a huge blessing. I never felt like I had to give up my personal life to complete my classwork. I could earn my degree at my own pace.

In addition, the coursework requires you to consider a biblical perspective. This portion of each class was incredibly valuable as it helped me to become more knowledgeable about what my belief and worldview is.

While completing my degree, the company I worked for had a major transition that resulted in many job cuts. I did leave my job, but I had always intended to find a new job after I finished my degree.  I am now able to apply for jobs that require an advanced degree. I now have the experience and education that make me a strong candidate in the hiring process. In fact, I was hired by Geneva College as the Manager of Library Circulation Services. I would have never had this opportunity without my degree.

Completing my degree from Geneva College was one of my most proud moments. I am glad that I did not give up. If you are considering going back to school as a working adult, consider the Online Degree Program at Geneva College.
