Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva College announced changes to their Department of Communication with several exciting details.  Addressing the needs of students and the changing landscape of communication – Geneva has restructured the majors within the communication department. The newly named communication major – Communication Media & Rhetoric will prepare students to skillfully and faithfully create content for our challenging and complex world.

With a shift in the department from a general communication major - the new Communication Media & Rhetoric major builds on the richness of the communication curriculum to prepare students for leadership, career success, and graduate studies. The major will specifically address contemporary concerns and trends in human communication through written excellence, verbal acumen, critical thinking, and technical knowledge. Students in this major will become equipped with the knowledge and values of their chosen vocation through a Christian perspective.

Jeffery Schindel, Assistant Professor of Communication, states,

“We revised and realigned the courses in the major to better equip students with the necessary biblical worldview and rhetorical framework for human flourishing in their personal and professional lives. The rhetorical tradition provides the framework to develop the essential sensibilities and skills in human communication. The curriculum equips students as servant-leaders who persuasively and winsomely engage others in oral, written, and mediated communication.”

Additionally, the Department of Communication is excited to announce the renaming of their main department building on campus.  Formerly known as the Integrated Media Center or IMC, the building’s new name, GEV Studios, pays tribute to the former radio station once housed in its location and run by the staff and students of Geneva College.  WGEV Radio shut down nearly 20 years ago in response to the changing media landscape and student needs. The radio station has a special place in the heart of many alumni, who have never strayed from calling the building WGEV.

To celebrate the new changes and connect current students with alumni, the Department of Communication will host an open house and reunion during homecoming weekend. Scheduled for October 7th from 1:00-2:30pm, alumni can find details and register for all homecoming events at www.geneva.edu/homecoming.

Geneva invites prospective students interested in learning more about the Communication Department and new major to schedule a campus visit, www.geneva.edu/admissions/visit/.
