Study Abroad

It is important that any student who wishes to take advantage of off-campus study opportunities meet with financial aid personnel at least one semester prior to the beginning of the program to discuss his or her particular situation. Geneva College has adopted the following policy concerning financial aid for students studying off-campus:

Financial Aid Types:

• Federal: Federal Pell Grant, Federal SEOG Grant, Federal TEACH Grant, Federal Direct Loans
• State: PHEAA Grant, WV State Grant, Ohio College Opportunity Grant
• Institutional: Academic & Honors scholarships, Geneva Grant, Endowed & Funded Scholarships, etc.
• Tuition Benefit: Tuition Benefit (staff grant and tuition exchange) for eligible employee dependents

Students participating in an off-campus program will:

• Be charged standard Geneva College tuition or the Program tuition, whichever is higher
• Pay Geneva College the Room & Board costs associated with each program
• Be charged an off-campus study administrative fee of $300 ($150 for a summer program)
• Be eligible for 100% of Federal/State aid and outside scholarships (except Jerusalem University College for federal aid)
• Be required to complete the Crossroads Grant application form if they would like to apply for additional aid
• Be charged Geneva tuition for the cost of any extra course they register to take from Geneva College while participating in their Off-Campus program
• Be able to receive Geneva Church Matching grant funds and some endowed scholarships at 100% level (see Office of Financial Aid for details)
• Students studying on a Tuition Benefit or Exchange will receive 50% of their waiver for the semester they are participating in a program off-campus, no matter the program. Tuition Exchange is not applicable for summer.

The minimum cost of Geneva′s off-campus programs is the same as Geneva College′s regular semester tuition, the program’s room & board cost, plus a $300.00 administrative fee.  If the tuition cost of the chosen off-campus program is higher than Geneva′s tuition rate the student will be charged the full tuition cost of the program chosen, plus the $300.00 administrative fee.

There are many outside sources of funding for study abroad. Look through the options below and also search some of the free scholarship databases: Fastweb, Scholarships.com, College Board, and Cappex. 

Freeman - ASIA

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia sponsored by the Institute for International Education (IIE) provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.  

Pell Grant Recipients are eligible to receive the Gilman International Scholarship which aims to diversify and expand participation in international study by awarding grants of up to $5,000 to undergraduate students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad.

One $1,000 scholarship awarded each Fall and Spring. 

The Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) invests in promising students with financial need who wish to study abroad. Potential applicants who meet our eligibility requirements may participate on any international education program that meets their academic objectives. Scholarships range from $1,250 – $10,000 and can be applied for programs that run for at least 28 days. 

Boren Scholarship

Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students by focusing on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. Boren Scholars represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation.

The maximum scholarship award is $10,000 for a semester abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need.

Gilman-McCain Scholarship (for undergraduate children of active duty service members)

The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for undergraduate child dependents of active duty service members (Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Developed under the framework of the State Department’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, the John McCain International Scholarship for the Children of Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is open to eligible students enrolled at accredited U.S. colleges and universities who receive any type of Title IV federal financial aid. 

Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship

The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship is awarded biannually to passionate students who want to explore the world. The scholarship may be used for tuition, room and board, books, or travel. Scholarships are awarded for fall, spring, and summer terms. The winner of the Tortuga Scholarship will receive a $1,000 scholarship for studying abroad and one travel backpack.

Explore the World Travel Scholarship

The Explore the World Travel Scholarship is awarded yearly by Hostelling International USA (HI USA) to help fund travel with an educational or service component. Applicants must be between the ages of 18-30, be a U.S. citizen or green card holder, demonstrate financial need as outlined in the application guidelines, and reside or attend school in one of the select metropolitan areas where HI USA has a community presence. Scholarships are in the amount of $2,000, paid in $1,000 installments pre- and post-travel.

Ashley Soulé Conroy Study Abroad Scholarship

Ashley’s Foundation first began in 2006 as a way of honoring the life of Ashley Soulé Conroy and as a way for Ashley’s family and friends to heal in the wake of her passing. Ashley loved travel, so her loved ones envisioned a small foundation, something that could offer scholarships in Ashley’s name to a few deserving university students planning to study abroad. They envisioned a way of helping these students realize their dream of studying in the far-flung corners of the globe that Ashley so dreamed of visiting herself someday.

Scholarships are awarded for the fall and spring semesters in the amount of $4,000.
