How will you observe Join Hands Day on May 6th? Falling on the first Saturday in May, this special day of multigenerational connectivity encourages adults and youth to work together on projects that foster community spirit and bridge the gaps between generations. It was founded in 2000 by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with Points of Light Foundation.
Since Join Hands Day’s inception, service organizations across America have beautified surroundings, provided care for those in need, and fostered communication and recognition of shared values across generations. The day provides a great way to:
“Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.” 1 Timothy 5: 1-2 (NLT)
Finding inspiration in 1 Timothy, here are 10 suggestions on how to spend your day and show those older than you, and those younger than you, that they play an invaluable part in your life and are essential to a happy, thriving community:
Remember that your projects can be as simple or as involved as you want. The goal is to work together across generations, hand in hand, to create a deeper and stronger sense of community and a charitable sense of brotherhood and sisterhood.
