How will you observe Join Hands Day on May 6th? Falling on the first Saturday in May, this special day of multigenerational connectivity encourages adults and youth to work together on projects that foster community spirit and bridge the gaps between generations. It was founded in 2000 by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with Points of Light Foundation.

Since Join Hands Day’s inception, service organizations across America have beautified surroundings, provided care for those in need, and fostered communication and recognition of shared values across generations. The day provides a great way to:

  • Increase understanding and rapport between young people and adults who participate in the local projects.
  • Encourage lasting friendships made across generations.
  • Help bring more young people into leadership roles in many organizations.

“Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father. Talk to younger men as you would to your own brothers. Treat older women as you would your mother, and treat younger women with all purity as you would your own sisters.” 1 Timothy 5: 1-2 (NLT)

Finding inspiration in 1 Timothy, here are 10 suggestions on how to spend your day and show those older than you, and those younger than you, that they play an invaluable part in your life and are essential to a happy, thriving community:

  1. Hold a food drive for your area’s food bank or homeless shelter, and then help deliver food to families in need, or cook and serve the shelter’s community meals.
  2. Beautify a community park or garden by planting flowers, shrubs, and trees. Install new benches. Enlist the help of a landscape architect or master gardener to do this for a nursing home or assisted living facility.
  3. Refurbish or build a new playground in your community’s park or childcare center. Paint benches and tables bright colors, add child-safe play equipment, and create groomed walking and bike trails.
  4. Teach seniors computer skills, or help seniors and youth learn internet skills together. Tutor seniors on the use of smartphones.
  5. Create a welcoming entrance to your town with a custom-made sign, vibrant plantings, and a flagpole.
  6. Stage a senior citizen prom with a potluck dinner, live band music, door prizes, and awards. Solicit donations from community businesses, and be sure to crown a prom queen and king.
  7. Organize a book and toy drive for children in need or those living in group homes or safe houses.
  8. Hold a bicycle repair clinic and teach children bicycle maintenance.
  9. Spend the day at your local animal shelter grooming and socializing the cats and walking the dogs.
  10. Brighten the lives of military veterans or seniors in assisted living homes by putting on a rollicking musical concert for them that includes many songs they’re sure to remember.

Remember that your projects can be as simple or as involved as you want. The goal is to work together across generations, hand in hand, to create a deeper and stronger sense of community and a charitable sense of brotherhood and sisterhood.
