Ways to Relax

Everyday Living

Exams. Jobs. Internships. College students are busy. Clubs. Scholarships. A second job. We are a generation that is always on the move. This is not healthy for us. We must take time off, slow down, and relax. Some of the best ways to relax are through walking, reading, and drawing. These are relaxing activities that are available at any time.

A wonderful way to unwind is to take a walk. A casual stroll or determined stride gives us a chance to explore and enjoy God’s creation. After a long semester, some of us are starting to feel a bit of cabin-fever. It's warm enough to wonder around creation to give us a chance to relieve this inevitable itch. Walking is an outdoor activity, which makes it COVID-friendly and safe, as well. Plus, Geneva College is close to the head of a rails-to-trails path, which gives students a cost-free opportunity to leave the campus and get some exercise.

Reading is another relaxing activity that can be done safely in the times of COVID-19. It is less weather-dependent than walking and also offers a wide selection of genres. From fictional romance to a book on geography, books allow students to escape from college life. Step through the looking glass with Alice, sail the Mississippi river with Huckleberry Finn, or rule Narnia with Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. Peruse the library if you aren’t sure what kind of adventure you want and to find informational books on subjects that interest you. Books allow us to expand our knowledge and escape the pressures that we face on a day-to-day basis.

If you are still striving to escape the present world, drawing is another option. It is enjoyable and relaxing while also allowing us to explore our creative side. Diving into our creative side helps us to deal with our stress and cope with different issues that arise in the day-to-day life. It allows us to express or emotions in ways that otherwise could not. It also gives us a chance to create something that we can share with other people, and we can use it to brighten their day as well.

In conclusion, we need time to unwind in order to maintain good health and good spirit. It's even something that God has commanded us to do regularly. Some fun ways to relax are to take walks, which has the dual benefit of exercise, to read and learn new things or escape to the world of our imagination, and to draw, which helps us to cope with our emotions and create something beautiful that we can share with others.
