Faculty Advice for Seniors

Picture of Faculty Advice for Seniors
Everyday Living

Throughout their time at Geneva, the senior class had the opportunity and obligation to listen to their professors. As we say farewell to our graduates, some faculty members provide parting words of wisdom to the class of 2024.

Dr. Jonathan Watt — “When you are out of here and not sure what to do — especially if you didn’t land exactly what you wanted first round, that’s okay. Go get a job, pay your bills, normalize your life, and go from there. Life is like crossing a stream on stepping stones, one stone at a time, so take that first right step.”

Associate Professor Stephanie Schindel — “I would encourage you to find a good Christ-centered, gospel-preaching church, with a supportive church family and pastor.”

Dr. Denise Murphy-Gerber — “I tell my graduating students that I think they should get chickens. Chickens and ducks are a great way to unwind at the end of the day. Watch them and they will provide unending entertainment — and you can get breakfast from them every day.”

Dr. Paul Poteete — “After graduation, I encourage you to find work that brings glory to the Lord. So whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, and be sure to do that to the glory of the Lord.”

Associate Professor Brian Merritt — “I think a lot of questions center around what you do with your career and how to advance. I would suggest that you do the best that you can in the position that you are in, and that will prepare you best for your next position.”

Dr. David Shaw — “My advice for you is that when you get to that office that has a coffee break room and you can drink seven cups of coffee a day — don’t do it.”

Assistant Professor Julie Hines — “I would encourage you to view every day as an opportunity to grow and learn. Make sure to use your God-given talents to make the world a better place.”

Dr. Jeffrey Cole — “My piece of advice is that you should remember that you are a human being, not a human do. Your value comes not from what you do, but who you are in Christ.”

Dr. Joel Ward — “My advice would be to find a small church that has a regular potluck meal and join it.”

Dr. Lynda Szabo — “Life is often full of amazing surprises. The things that you might think will be the next things for you, might not be the next thing. But please know that God has an amazing plan for your life, and you will look back in amazement over what God will do with you in the next 20 or 30 or 40 years.”

Senior class, as you move into the next stage of your life, trust God to guide your paths. We are so excited to see where you go next, and we hope to see you again — whether it be at homecoming, a football game, or as a graduate student. We hope for all the best in your future endeavors. You were made for this!
