What To Do With A Business Degree

Students that study business will graduate with an abundance of marketable skills and an overwhelming variety of career options ahead of them. Nick Schmieg ‘23 is a student at Geneva majoring in Business/Sports Marketing & Marketing. “I love how Geneva business professors’ decades of field experience coincide with their Christian perspective that teach us beyond the textbook, preparing us for the real world in our respective concentrations.” Geneva business professors are dedicated to their work and seek to prepare all of their students to excel in their careers.

At Geneva, students in the Business Department will wrestle with questions like: What is the relationship between profit and service? How do you meet the needs of a client and the marketplace while maintaining integrity and a commitment to Christ? Throughout their education, they will seek to develop answers to these questions and many others as they become proficient in skills such as communication, management, finances, and problem-solving. With these skills and many others, students will be prepared to excel in their chosen field. Here are just a few of the many career paths available to business students.

Business Analyst

As a business analyst, one would analyze data and propose changes to increase effectivity within a business. They would seek to identify areas of weakness and strength in order to provide useful advice. Students that graduate with a business major would have the analytical and critical thinking skills that would allow them to excel in this field. In the United States the average salary for a business analyst is $85,800.

Media Strategist

Media strategists analyze digital marketing data to create effective advertising campaigns. This position would oversee and devise advertising campaigns based on the data collected through surveys, webpage visits, ratings, etc. Students majoring in business will acquire skills necessary for this position such as digital marketing and data analysis skills. Business majors minoring in marketing, communication, design, etc. would be prepared for a position such as this. It is estimated that the average salary for a media strategist is $66,487, however, salaries for this position vary greatly from business to business.

Accountant or Financial Advisor

Business majors are expected to learn how to properly manage the finances of a business. Accountants are responsible for keeping and evaluating financial records. Financial advisors have a similar role as they provide financial advice and guidance. A business major might choose to pursue a career as an accountant or financial advisor where they can practice their financial, problem-solving, and data analysis skills. The average salary of an accountant is reported to be $60,700, however, this position also reflects great variety depending on the position and the business. The average salary of a financial advisor is reported to be $84,600.

Project Manager

Project managers are expected to lead teams that organize, plan, and execute projects. Projects can vary significantly due to the nature of the business. Regardless of industry, project managers are expected to use managerial skills to effectively lead a team and work within financial limitations. The organizational leadership skills, financial skills, and problem-solving skills taught to business majors are immensely valuable for successful project managers. The estimated average salary of a project manager is $83,700.

Marketing Manager

Marketing managers design and implement the marketing and communication strategies of the business. A marketing manager would be expected to lead a team and develop creative marketing strategies in multiple channels. Business majors will be taught some courses in marketing, but they will also take courses in strategic communication, organizational leadership, and business analytics that will prepare them well for a career as a marketing manager. The estimated average salary for this career is $69,000, but the salary for this position is likely to vary significantly depending on the region, the company, and the responsibilities of this position.

Operations Coordinator

Operations managers often work behind the scenes to oversee the activities involved in developing the goods and/or services of a business. Operations managers are expected to ensure that the products of a business are being effectively developed and distributed. The managerial and data analysis skills that business majors learn will allow them to thrive as operations coordinators. Likewise, their ability to think critically and strategically will be invaluable in this position. Operations coordinators tend to make on average $69,700 annually.

Human Resources Manager

Human resource managers execute more of the administrative managerial tasks. A human resources manager might be expected to oversee the hiring and training of new employees. They often serve as a link between the employees and the administration. Business majors can succeed as Human Resource Managers since they will have learned valuable communication, administrative, and managerial skills. Human Resource Managers earn on average a salary of $78,500.

Business majors are not limited to the careers listed above. The Business Department at Geneva College ensures that students learn valuable skills that enable them to succeed in any career path they might choose to pursue after their education. Majoring in Business is a wise choice, especially if one feels passionate about leadership.
