What can you do with a degree in biblical studies? Plenty!

Earning a degree in biblical studies can be the launching point for a number of faith- and service-oriented vocations, as well as a foundational degree for those planning to enroll in seminary or in a graduate school of religion.

If you’re considering an undergraduate degree in biblical studies, you likely already have some long-term goals in mind. But what about the short term — is a degree in biblical studies for you? What are the benefits of a degree in which you study the Bible, both now and in the future? Is this degree program simply a necessary step toward your end goals, or are there benefits even as you enter the program?

Consider these 7 benefits of earning your bachelor’s degree in biblical studies. We’ve included a mix of benefits, some of which you’ll start seeing immediately and some that apply more toward your long-term goals.

  1. Grow Stronger in Your Faith

First and crucially, a degree in biblical studies is a fantastic way to grow stronger in your faith. You’ve probably been studying your Bible for many years already, and you’ve likely had great foundational teaching at your church.

But the Bible is a deep, profound, and nuanced text. Many scholars have studied for a lifetime and still find new observations and grow deeper in their love for the Bible even into old age.

Not only that, but a big part of this degree program is also learning how to study your Bible. Yes, there will be plenty of actual study involved, too. But even more important is gaining the analytical and hermeneutical tools necessary to prepare you for a lifetime of study on your own.

Through this combination, you’ll have the opportunity to grow deeper and stronger in your faith. As you learn even more strategies for studying the scriptures, you’ll grow in your appreciation for the Bible and its many complexities.

  1. You Get to Study and Learn with Like-Minded Believers

What’s the benefit of going to engineering school? You get to be around people (students and faculty alike) that know and love engineering.

What’s the benefit of going to a top-tier law school? The same thing, only with matters of jurisprudence.

And the same is true of attending a school with which you’re theologically aligned (and choosing to explore areas such as biblical studies). You’ll be surrounded by like-minded believers, others who are just as or even more excited about studying God’s Word.

There’s a cumulative or synergistic effect when you choose a right-fit school, a place that’s aligned with your interests, an academic program that is supported throughout the curriculum, in every subject on campus. (And if biblical studies is your passion, you’ll find that synergy here at Geneva!)

  1. Knowing You’re Pursuing Something That Matters

Some people enter college without a clear direction on what they want to do when they’re finished. Others enroll in programs that don’t thrill them but will lead to lucrative career paths.

But many people enter college because they want to pursue something that’s deeply meaningful to them, something that truly matters.

Biblical studies are central to the mission of everyone at Geneva. A Biblical worldview informs the understanding of every subject, from accounting to psychology.

This degree has many benefits, though, and one of the most significant is the knowledge that you’re pursuing something that matters. Studying the Bible matters to you personally — and it can and will make a difference in the world around you.

  1. You’ll Be on a Path Toward a Career that Helps Others

Similarly, choosing this degree sets you on a path toward a career that focuses on helping others. Whether your long-term goals are academic, church-oriented, or service-oriented, all of these are others-focused career paths for which an undergrad biblical studies degree can be a great foundation.

As a person in vocational ministry at a local church, you’ll have countless opportunities to serve the needs of those in your congregation and community. Or as a leader in a religious nonprofit, you’ll have similarly great opportunities to reach people, often in their times of greatest need.

  1. You’ll Build Relationships and Friendships That Can Last a Lifetime

No matter what program you choose in college, the relationships and friendships that you make along the way can be transformative. Godly friendships can edify you and stir you up to love and good works (Hebrews 10:24) all throughout your college journey. And like-minded friends, especially those who you’ll study alongside, can become lifelong friends that continue to sharpen and strengthen you throughout the rest of your life.

People also make connections during the college years that can reap dividends down the road. Ministry partnerships and opportunities you can’t fathom today could present themselves in 10 or 15 years — all thanks to the connections you make while in school.

  1. You’ll Prepare Yourself for Careers in Vocational Service

You may have a clear sense of what God is calling you to be. Perhaps you believe you’ve been called to local church ministry as a pastor or teacher. Perhaps you have your sights set on missions work (whether foreign or domestic). Maybe your long-term goal is to be an instructor or professor at a Christian college or university, or any number of other paths.

For those who are seeking careers in vocational Christian ministry, a degree in biblical studies can be a great starting point, either for their career path or for further education.

  1. Greater Sense of Fulfillment from Pursuing What You’re Passionate About

Last, biblical studies is a great course of study if it’s what you’re passionate about.

Can you get a degree in accounting and still study your Bible? Of course you can.

But you’ll only be truly passionate about your work as an accountant if it’s actually one of your passions. An accountant that is both well-compensated and passionate about accounting is doubly blessed.

If your passion is the Scriptures, follow that passion. You’ll have a greater sense of fulfillment if you do.

If you’re serious about your studies of the scriptures, consider the biblical studies program at Geneva. You’ll work with professors who are as passionate as you are, and you’ll gain a newfound love for God’s Word in the process.
