The Excellence in Teaching Award, selected by the Awards Selection Committee (composed of faculty and students), is presented annually to an instructor, both part time and full time, who display excellence in classroom teaching ability, educational leadership, creativity in teaching methodology, course and program development, and the enhancement of the educational climate and opportunities at Geneva.
The Excellence in Scholarship Award, selected by the Awards Selection Committee (composed of faculty and students), is presented annually to an instructor who exhibits a breadth and depth of knowledge in their discipline in a way which significantly enhances the intellectual climate of the college; contribution to the advancement of their field and recognition beyond the Geneva campus; and stimulation and direction of scholarly activity among students.
The Outstanding Service Award, selected by the Awards Selection Committee (composed of faculty and students), is presented annually to an instructor who exhibits identifiable service activities for the campus or the broader community and the positive impact of the service events either internally and externally.

Professor of Philosophy Robert Frazier, PhD, a Geneva faculty member since 2003, holds a bachelor’s degree from Gordon College, a master’s degree from Gordon–Conwell Theological Seminary, and a doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Students describe Dr. Frazier as “dynamic,” “engaging,” and “a joy to learn under,” noting his “command of the classroom,” willingness to “go the extra mile,” and warm, pastoral presence that strengthens learning and community.
One student says, "His command of the classroom is impeccable and so thoroughly engaging that no student would dare nor even desire to fall asleep or have their mind disengaged from his lecture. Not only is his knowledge beyond the undergraduates understanding but his warm-hearted tenderness, affection of his students and personal piety defeats any feelings of anxiety, tension or uncertainty. He is a joy to learn under!"

Matthew Fuss, PhD has been a member of the faculty since 2011 and is a Geneva alumnus with bachelor’s degrees in business and Spanish. He earned his doctorate from Duquesne University.
Fuss regularly presents at academic conferences and received a recent Best Paper award for “The Temptations of Leadership: How Faith Protects Leaders (and Their Followers) from Themselves.” His publications span leadership, management, and business pedagogy. In fall 2024, he presented “Keeping Core Values in Focus” at the Christian Business Faculty Conference at Calvin College. He was invited to a NetVUE professional development seminar on teaching vocational exploration in summer 2024 and completed the Colson Fellows program in May 2025.

Denise Murphy-Gerber, PhD has made an enduring impact as a key leader in the International Business Program. she has planned and led bi-annual study trips to China, Europe, and Latin America — high-impact experiences that require extensive preparation and benefit students across disciplines. Her governance service includes past roles as department chair and faculty senate secretary.
She has also served as Geneva’s Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) since the College joined the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), building strong relationships with student-athletes and representing Geneva at PAC meetings.
She currently serves as a faculty representative to the Geneva College Board of Trustees, offering insight from both her FAR work and classroom perspective. Colleagues and students alike commend her consistent, hands-on care for advisees.

The Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award recognizes teaching excellence, educational leadership, creative methodology, and program development. Professor Wendy Whelpley has taught for Geneva since 2010 — now in her 30th semester — and has been instrumental in the delivery of sociology and community development coursework. She also directs City House, a living-learning community where students learn together as they serve their neighborhood.
Student reflections underscore her impact: she “teaches how the Word of God and a Geneva education apply to living faithfully in a neighborhood,” “equips students to think critically and challenge ideas,” and “cares deeply outside the classroom.”

Dr. Kerry McMahon has been named the 2024 Outstanding Service Award winner in recognition of his unwavering dedication to Geneva College and its surrounding community. A 1979 Geneva alum and long-serving faculty member, Dr. McMahon devoted over two decades to faithfully supporting the Chemistry Department and the College as a whole. His service includes organizing regular lab safety inspections, managing the department stockroom, and advising the Chemistry Club—most notably assisting with the beloved Big Kablooey demo event. Beyond campus, he led the annual soil analysis initiative, offering valuable service to the local community, and shared his musical talents as a guitarist on his church worship team. He also served as faculty marshal for over ten years, embodying both leadership and care in Geneva traditions. Though he officially retired in May 2024, Dr. McMahon continues to serve by teaching and supporting his department, exemplifying a true spirit of lifelong service.

Dr. Jonathan Watt received the 2024 Excellence in Scholarship Award for his extraordinary scholarly productivity, academic leadership, and long-standing contribution to Geneva College and the broader academic community. Over the past year alone, Dr. Watt organized and hosted two major conferences on Geneva’s campus—the October 2023 Missions Conference and the April 2024 Orality and Literacy Conference, where he also presented original research. He is a co-editor and contributor to the Baker Encyclopedia of Biblical Greek and Linguistics, and in 2024 published a Commentary on Colossians and Philemon as part of the Brill Exegetical Commentary Series. In addition, he authored scholarly chapters on language, religious literacy, and sociolinguistics for upcoming academic volumes. Remarkably, he has maintained this level of scholarship while teaching beyond a full-time load and serving as Department Chair. A faculty member since 2000, Dr. Watt holds degrees from Syracuse University, Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, and the University of Pittsburgh, and this marks his third time receiving the Excellence in Scholarship Award—previously honored in 2005 and 2019. His dedication to scholarship and to the mission of Geneva College continues to inspire students and colleagues alike.

Professor Alisa Huston has been named the 2024 recipient of the Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award in recognition of her outstanding dedication to student learning, her engaging and inclusive teaching style, and her significant contributions to Geneva College’s Humanities and English programs. Since joining the faculty in 2021, Prof. Huston has played a key role in implementing the developmental reading and writing curriculum, helping students grow in both skill and confidence. Students consistently praise her for her personal investment in their success, her thoughtful and adaptive teaching methods, and her ability to foster a classroom environment where they feel heard, supported, and inspired. Her care for students extends beyond academics, building strong relationships that encourage honest and meaningful engagement. Prof. Huston’s excellence in teaching truly enhances the educational experience at Geneva.

Dr. Scott Shidemantle has been awarded the 2024 Excellence in Teaching Award in recognition of his long-standing dedication to exemplary instruction, educational leadership, and the enrichment of Geneva College’s academic environment. A faculty member since 1997, Dr. Shidemantle is widely respected by students and colleagues alike for his deep knowledge, engaging teaching style, and ability to make complex subjects understandable and meaningful. Students praise his classes as memorable, insightful, and even transformative—often recommended across generations of Geneva students. With academic credentials from Slippery Rock, Gordon-Conwell, Princeton, and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Dr. Shidemantle brings a wealth of scholarship and passion to the classroom, continually inspiring students in their learning and faith. His influence both inside and outside the classroom makes him a truly deserving recipient of this honor.

Dr. James Matta received the 2023 Outstanding Service Award for his exemplary dedication to the counseling profession, Geneva College, and the broader community. A nationally recognized leader, Dr. Matta was honored with the 2021 Pennsylvania Counseling Association Lifetime Achievement Award and has served as President of the American Association of State Counseling Boards. His ongoing service includes roles on the Beaver County Behavioral Health Gambling Coalition and as a community liaison for the NIH's landmark Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study. At Geneva, he has provided vital leadership as track coordinator for Clinical Mental Health, support for School Counseling students, and as Interim Director of Graduate Counseling. Now serving as Director of the Counseling Program while exemplifying a deep commitment to student success and institutional advancement.

Dr. Scott Shidemantle received the 2023 Excellence in Scholarship Award in recognition of his significant contributions to biblical scholarship, his commitment to student engagement, and his impact on both the academic and church communities. A member of Geneva College’s Biblical Studies Department since 1997, Dr. Shidemantle exemplifies the award criteria through his extensive scholarly work, including serving as a book review editor for the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society and contributing over 25 reviews himself. His essay on ancient letter forms is set to be published in the Baker Encyclopedia of Biblical Greek and Linguistics. He actively integrates his scholarship with teaching and mentoring, leading study trips to Israel since 2004 and serving as a visiting faculty member at Jerusalem University College in 2022. His advanced Old and New Testament courses reflect both his academic depth and dedication to enriching the intellectual climate of Geneva. As an ordained ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church of America, Dr. Shidemantle also extends his scholarship to the service of the Church, making him a deserving recipient of this honor.

Professor Ken Wilson received the 2023 Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award in recognition of his outstanding dedication to student learning, excellence in instruction, and lasting impact on the Geneva College community. Since joining the Engineering Department in 2019, he has been consistently nominated by both students and faculty for his engaging, supportive, and effective teaching. Students praise his deep care for their understanding, his clear and relatable communication of complex material, and his genuine mentorship rooted in faith and humility. Known for going above and beyond in the classroom, Professor Wilson has made a lasting difference in the lives of his students, embodying the spirit of excellence Geneva seeks to honor.

Dr. Keith Martel received the 2023 Excellence in Teaching Award for his exceptional commitment to challenging, supporting, and inspiring students across a broad range of disciplines at Geneva College. A full-time faculty member since 2012, Dr. Martel has taught courses in Higher Education, Political Science, Sociology, and Humanities, consistently adapting to the needs of students and the institution. With degrees from Geneva and a PhD in Philosophy from Duquesne University, he is known for his deep critical engagement and ability to make complex ideas accessible and meaningful. Students describe him as a gifted educator who both challenges and supports them, prioritizing their intellectual growth and well-being. Whether mentoring future educators or helping humanities students discover joy in learning, Dr. Martel has made a profound impact on Geneva’s academic community.

Professor Julie Hines received the 2022 Outstanding Service Award for her dedicated and impactful service to Geneva College and its broader community since 2018. As an Assistant Professor of Business, she has consistently supported student success through active collaboration with the Calling and Career Center, advising for the Accounting Consortium, and leadership of the Accounting Club. She organizes the annual Accounting and Business Career Fair, connecting students with nearly 20 employers, and played a key role in promoting Geneva’s broader Career Fair, earning recognition for student engagement. Her commitment was especially evident last year when she and her department colleagues stepped in to cover additional coursework and advising after the unexpected loss of a colleague. Professor Hines exemplifies service through her tireless efforts to enrich student experiences and strengthen the Geneva community.

Dr. Sha Wang Luangkesorn was awarded the 2022 Excellence in Scholarship Award for her outstanding achievements as a concert pianist, music theorist, and educator who has significantly enriched the academic and artistic environment at Geneva College. Since joining the faculty in 2006, she has earned national and international recognition through prestigious performance awards and collaborations with acclaimed artists. Her global presence includes performances, master classes, and scholarly presentations across the U.S., Asia, and Europe. As founder of the Pittsburgh Piano Academy and director of the Geneva International Music Festival, she has contributed greatly to music education and cultural exchange.

Dr. Julie Durbin received the 2022 Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award in recognition of her exceptional creativity, educational leadership, and Christ-centered approach to teaching. Her students consistently praise her as one of the best teachers they’ve had, noting her deep care for their intellectual and spiritual growth. Known for her thoughtful pedagogy rooted in worship and service, Dr. Durbin is described as a patient, inspiring role model whose life of service naturally flows into the classroom. Her impact on Geneva’s educational climate is profound, and the college is truly honored to celebrate her contributions.

Dr. Mark Tronzo received the 2022 Excellence in Teaching Award for his exceptional dedication to student learning, academic rigor, and Christ-centered mentorship at Geneva College. A faculty member since 2015, Dr. Tronzo is widely recognized by his students for his selflessness, kindness, and ability to communicate complex topics in relatable ways. His classroom teaching is described as extraordinary, consistently inspiring students to grow both intellectually and spiritually. With a remarkable academic background—holding multiple degrees across mathematics, engineering, and theology—Dr. Tronzo exemplifies a deep commitment to education and serves as a powerful Christian role model. His passion, humility, and investment in his students make him a transformative presence in the Geneva community.

Professor Dan Raver was awarded the 2021 Outstanding Service Award in recognition of his exceptional and sustained commitment to Geneva College over more than 40 years. Appointed in 1980, he has faithfully served the College, his department, and his students through decades of leadership and dedication. He has been a key contributor to departmental accreditation efforts and has maintained nearly continuous involvement in faculty committees, often serving as chair. Elected by his peers to lead the Faculty Senate, he provided steady leadership, even taking on increased responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. A former recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award, Prof. Raver continues to earn student nominations, reflecting his enduring impact in the classroom and beyond.

Dr. Christopher Jobes received the 2021 Excellence in Scholarship Award for his significant contributions to engineering scholarship and student mentorship at Geneva College. Since 2007, he has consistently published research, with 69 publications by Fall 2020, and has coauthored work with students. Holding degrees from both Geneva and West Virginia University, he combines academic excellence with community service through music ministry. His dedication strengthens Geneva’s academic climate and supports student growth in scholarship.

Dr. Megan Morton received the 2021 Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award for her outstanding contributions to Geneva College’s educational environment through engaging, creative, and faith-integrated instruction. Since 2009, she has served the English Department in both full-time and part-time roles, consistently demonstrating excellence in the classroom. Her students praise her for making learning enjoyable while encouraging deep thinking, using vivid metaphors and thoughtful examples, and creating a supportive, faith-centered atmosphere. Going beyond standard curriculum, she inspires students to see practical life value in their studies—transforming classes like ENG 101 into meaningful, skill-building experiences.

Dr. Daryl Sas received the 2021 Excellence in Teaching Award in recognition of his exceptional dedication to student learning, academic excellence, and faith-integrated education at Geneva College. A member of the Biology Department since 1988, Dr. Sas is widely respected for his engaging and intellectually challenging lectures, consistently encouraging students to think critically and apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Student nominations highlight his personal investment in their success—whether through early morning office visits, thoughtful academic guidance, or his openness to diverse perspectives. Known for pushing students toward excellence while celebrating God’s design in creation, Dr. Sas exemplifies the highest standards of teaching, leadership, and care within the Geneva community.

The Outstanding Service Award was presented to Dr. Mildred L. Johnson, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice. The Outstanding Service Award is presented annually to an instructor who exhibits identifiable service activities for the campus or broader community and the positive impact of the service events, either internally or externally. The faculty selected Dr. Johnson for this award on behalf of the incredible work that she does in the community.

The Excellence in Scholarship Award was presented to Dr. Keith Martel, Professor of Higher Education and Director of Geneva’s master’s in Higher Education Program. The criteria for this award include breadth and depth of knowledge in the discipline in a way which significantly enhances the intellectual climate of the college; contribution to the advancement of their field and recognition beyond the Geneva campus; and stimulation and direction of scholarly activity among students. This award was given to Dr. Martel on behalf of his outstanding intellectual contributions to the college, recognition of advancement outside of the college, as well as significant student involvement.

The Excellence in Part-Time Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Andrea Korcan-Buzza. This award was given to Dr. Korcan-Buzza on behalf of her excellent part-time teaching ability and leadership, creativity in teaching, course and program development, and enhancement of the educational climate and opportunities.

The Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Doug Bradbury, Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies. The criteria for this award include classroom teaching ability, educational leadership, creativity and teaching methodology, course and program development and enhancement of the educational climate and opportunities at Geneva. Dr. Bradbury is recognized for his prevalent desire to see his students succeed in and out of the classroom and his outstanding work as a professor at Geneva College.









Nominated by faculty, Dr. Eric Miller was awarded the 2017 Excellence in Scholarship Award. He joined the faculty at Geneva in 1999. Miller earned his Bachelor's in Bible from Lancaster Bible College, a Master's in Christian Thought from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a Ph.D. in American History from the University of Delaware. In 2016-2017, he contributed four articles to The Table, a website dedicated to a Center for Christian Thought, and published reviews of works from Matthew Tribe, Michael-Desh and Timothy Snyder. He is on the editorial board of Fides et Historia and is on the board of directors for Mars Hill Audio. In addition to his presentation of several lectures, Dr. Miller is currently working on a book on Brazilian evangelicalism.

The 2017 Excellence in Full-Time teaching Award recipient is Dr. Frederick “Jay” Neikirk , who has taught Political Science at Geneva since 1992. With a B.A. in Political Science and History and a M.A. in Political Science from the University of Delaware, as well as a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Illinois, he is respected and praised by many current and graduated students. One student had this to say about Dr. Neikirk, "The best teacher I have ever had. The way that he makes the dense subject matter of political science easy to understand is simply astounding. Overall, Dr. Neikirik's class has forever changed the way that I interact with the world around me."

The recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Service Award was Dr. Bradshaw Frey. Working at Geneva since 1984, Dr. Frey received his Bachelor’s degree from Geneva College in Social Science and his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh in Social Foundations of Education.
Currently, he teaches courses in Sociology and Higher Education at Geneva and helped launch the Beaver Falls community development corporation. Instrumental in the development of several community focused initiatives, Dr. Frey helped with the formation of City House, a living learning community for students in the city of Beaver Falls.
