Though Ann Van Hine was born in Oxford, England she has resided in the United States since she was 2 years old. She grew up in Oklahoma, Utah, Arizona, and New Jersey. In September 1975, Ann started her own business and on that very same day, she met her future husband, Bruce Van Hine. Ann owned and taught at the New School of Dance Arts until June 2011, when she retired from teaching dance.
Bruce and Ann were married in 1980 and two daughters were born to them. In 1990, Bruce achieved his lifetime dream of being a New York City Firefighter. He was stationed in the Bronx with Squad 41. Bruce was killed in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.
Since September 11, 2001, Ann has had numerous opportunities to share the story of God’s presence and peace as she navigated “a personal loss in the midst of a national tragedy”. In 2006 Ann became a volunteer guide at the 9/11 Tribute Museum in Manhattan where she leads walking tours of the National September 11 Memorial and speaks to school groups. She has shared her story all over the USA and internationally in Ireland, Belgium, England, and Japan.
At this time besides volunteering with the 9/11 Tribute Museum, Ann is a pursuing a writing career. Her story, Unexpected Blessings, was published in Chicken Soup for the Soul - Volunteer and Giving Back edition. A devotional about trusting God was published in The Upper Room. And she co-authored a children’s version of her story with her daughter, Meghan, that appeared in Clubhouse Magazine. Recently her memoir Pieces Falling: navigating 9/11 with faith, family and the FDNY was published.
Ann’s favorite new role is Mom-Mom to her three young grandchildren.
