What’s on your college bucket list? Whether you’ve already done a lot of unique things at Geneva or whether you’re hoping to make some lasting memories, here is a list of things you should consider doing before you graduate.
Have a picnic at a local park. From Buttermilk Falls to Brush Creek Park, there are multiple scenic spots near campus. It’s neat to experience a specific region in this way, especially if you’re not from around here.
Sing at a College-sponsored event. Every year holds many opportunities for students to demonstrate their singing skills, from musicals at Broadway Revue to old-time favorites at Oldies Night to the newest popular songs at My Generation Night (MGN).
Go to the last chapel of the semester. It’s a fun vibe. You should go at least once.
Attend a GVALS lecture. Each year the College invites prominent guests to participate in the Geneva Visiting Artist and Lecture Series. These lectures span a wide range of topics, from theology to politics and more, encouraging Geneva’s liberal arts vision, and providing a neat opportunity to hear various perspectives.
Get to know a professor. Use office hours to talk to professors about a paper you’re writing or some other project and then ask questions. Professors are often willing to share stories, experiences, and advice. Remember that they’re people, too!
Hike to the G. No Geneva bucket list would be complete without this one. Make sure you cross the river and climb the hill to the infamous G at least once during your college years. And make sure to ask around about the lore surrounding this spot.
Attend a Genevans Concert. The Genevans choir sings both at Christmas and during the spring semester. Each semester, the concert songs explore a particular theme through music. Recent themes have included “Blessing,” “Isaiah,” “Silence,” and “Word of God.”
Say yes to spending time with friends. College is a special time to build lasting friendships with like-minded people. If you can, take a few minutes to play a card game at the library or run a quick round of ultimate Frisbee if the opportunity arises. These will be lasting memories as you look back at your college years!
Join a club (or create one!). Geneva clubs are a great way to find other students with similar interests. Check out the club page and see if there’s a club for your major or area of interest!
Work as a TA. Nothing wrong with working at the cafeteria or the fitness center but consider applying for a teaching assistant position in your field of expertise, from humanities to biology to Bible. This can be a great opportunity to see “behind the scenes” of how professors work and make decisions.
Practice hospitality. How about a potluck meal hosted at your apartment with friends crowded around? Or what about inviting a group to lunch at Alex’s and facilitating good conversation? Yes, most of us don’t have our own spaces but that doesn’t mean we can’t creatively practice hospitality during our college years.
