Seeing Geneva’s Mission Up Close

Campus Life The College

When choosing a college I knew only three things: I wanted to play basketball, I wanted to be in a Christian environment, and I did not want to be in any debt. Then, with a phone call from the head basketball coach, Geneva became one of my options. But despite a good conversation and the bright outlook of being a Geneva student, I declined the offer. It just did not seem like the right fit, and I did not think that it was something I would be able to afford.

Several weeks later, the basketball team at the community college I planned to attend announced it would shut down, and my option to attend there and live at home fell through. At the same time, Geneva announced the Tuition Promise for Pennsylvania students. Within a month my entire plan had been switched around, and I was now going to get to be in a Christ-centered school playing basketball on a promising team. Plus, I could start a new life far enough away to not have to live at home but close enough to visit.

But God taking care of me did not stop there. When I started looking into jobs on campus there were none that really jumped out at me, so I abandoned the idea for my freshman year. Then, God seemed to bless me with another opportunity that just fell into my lap. Learning and Transition (aka L&T), my first ever class at Geneva, was taught by the college’s director of marketing, Chad Boler, and vice president of enrollment and marketing, Willem de Ruijter. They mentioned in class that there was a marketing internship that freshmen usually cannot get; however, if we emailed them, we would be considered. I had very little faith in being able to get this job, but God again took care of me. I ended up working what I will always argue is “the best job on campus” as a social media intern in Geneva’s marketing department.

Through being a social media intern, I have gotten to be a part of an amazing group of people that most students never get to know about. I also get to see an everyday behind-the-scenes look at what Geneva is made of. By being involved in marketing, I have learned to love the campus and students the way Geneva loves and cares for their students. Because of this, I can very confidently say that Geneva is truly Christ-centered, and the mission statement and goals are nothing less than exactly who they are.

Knowing that I get to be a part of something so great has made me strive to be a better person each day and set standards for myself that align with Geneva’s goals. The place that I am trusting to provide a good and meaningful education for me is truthful and confident in its values. I am thankful every day that the Lord has led me here and has taught me that He always has a plan and a purpose.
